Concrete, Steps & Retaining Walls in Toronto
Concrete deterioration often begins with water, movement or exposure that a surface patch alone cannot correct. Toronto freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing salts can worsen cracks, scaling and damage around entrances, walkways and retaining walls.

Statley Roofing & Masonry assesses the concrete, supporting conditions and drainage before recommending repair or replacement. The process includes an inspection, written quote and written contract before work, followed by clean-up and a walkthrough. Structural concerns are identified separately from cosmetic surface wear.
New Concrete Steps & Step Repairs
Entrance steps need consistent geometry, stable support and a surface that suits outdoor use. We assess cracked treads, settled landings, loose edges and water collecting near the doorway before proposing repairs or new construction. Toronto freeze-thaw conditions can worsen damage where the base moves or moisture reaches reinforcement. Work may involve forming new concrete, rebuilding damaged sections or replacing steps that are no longer suitable for patching. We consider drainage, handrail connections and the transition to the entrance. Applicable Ontario Building Code requirements are reviewed where relevant rather than copying irregular existing dimensions into new work.
Porch & Front Entrance Restoration
A deteriorating porch can involve several connected materials: concrete, masonry, stone caps, metal railings and the doorway threshold. We assess how these components meet and where water enters before defining restoration work. Toronto snow storage and de-icing salts often concentrate exposure at front entrances. Repairs may include rebuilding damaged edges, replacing loose units and correcting local drainage details. We distinguish surface wear from deterioration affecting structural support. Planning also considers access to the home during work and how repaired materials will meet existing finishes, so the entrance is treated as an assembly rather than a collection of unrelated patches.
Retaining Wall Construction & Repairs
A retaining wall must resist soil pressure and manage water behind it. Leaning faces, bulging courses and displaced caps can indicate drainage or support problems rather than a simple appearance issue. We assess wall height, retained ground, nearby structures and site access before discussing concrete, masonry or segmental options. Toronto freeze-thaw conditions make base preparation and drainage important. Engineering input may be needed for the wall and its relationship to surrounding property features. Some of this work may require a building permit from the City of Toronto; we'll confirm what's needed for your project.
Concrete Repairs
Concrete cracks and spalls need assessment before a repair material is selected. We examine whether the damage is shallow, reaches reinforcement or relates to ongoing movement. Toronto winter salts and repeated freezing can loosen surrounding concrete beyond the visibly broken edge. Repairs involve removing unsound material, preparing the substrate and applying a compatible repair system under suitable conditions. Exposed reinforcement may require additional treatment depending on its condition. We explain when a patch can address localized deterioration and when settlement, widespread damage or structural concerns call for a broader repair plan rather than repeated small applications.
Concrete Walkways & Pads
Walkways and equipment or utility pads need a suitable base, practical drainage and a layout matched to their intended use. We assess existing grades, soil conditions and nearby entrances before planning excavation and concrete placement. Toronto freeze-thaw exposure makes base preparation and control of water beneath the slab important. Work includes forming, reinforcement where appropriate, joints and a finish suited to the location. Uneven surfaces, ponding and widening cracks can indicate problems in an existing walkway. We also consider transitions to driveways and steps so new work does not introduce abrupt changes or direct runoff toward the building.
Concrete Driveway Repairs
Driveway damage may involve surface scaling, broken edges, settled sections or cracks caused by movement below the slab. We assess the pattern and depth of deterioration before recommending localized repairs or section replacement. Toronto de-icing salts and freeze-thaw exposure can worsen areas where water remains on or beneath the concrete. Work may include removing unsound material, rebuilding an edge or replacing a panel with attention to its base and joints. A thin surface application will not correct ongoing settlement. We discuss the appearance of repaired areas because new concrete and patching materials may differ from the surrounding driveway.
Concrete Resurfacing
Resurfacing can refresh suitable concrete that has superficial wear but remains stable and sound underneath. We inspect adhesion conditions, cracks, drainage and previous coatings before considering a bonded overlay or other compatible treatment. Toronto exterior exposure requires materials intended for freeze-thaw conditions and the expected traffic. Preparation may involve cleaning, mechanical profiling and localized repairs before the new surface is placed. Deep deterioration, active movement or trapped moisture can make resurfacing unsuitable. We explain these limits and discuss finish texture, since an attractive surface still needs practical traction and sensible water shedding around entrances and walkways.
Concrete Restoration
Concrete restoration addresses deterioration across an area or assembly rather than treating each visible defect independently. We assess cracking, delamination, exposed reinforcement and drainage to understand how the damage developed. Toronto salt exposure can contribute to reinforcement corrosion, while repeated wetting and freezing may enlarge damaged areas. The scope can include removal of unsound concrete, reinforcement-related repairs and reinstatement with compatible materials. Structural assessment may be needed where section loss or loading is a concern. We distinguish restoration from cosmetic resurfacing and explain which underlying conditions must be addressed before a new finish is considered.
Balcony & Concrete Restoration
Balcony deterioration deserves attention because falling concrete and weakened components can affect people below as well as occupants using the space. We assess visible cracking, spalling, drainage and railing attachment areas, with structural input where required. Toronto snow, rain and de-icing exposure can keep vulnerable edges wet. Restoration may involve controlled removal of unsound concrete, reinforcement treatment and compatible reinstatement, followed by appropriate surface protection where specified. Access and protection below the balcony are part of planning. Do not rely on a fresh coating to resolve structural deterioration, and restrict use if the condition raises an immediate safety concern.

Concrete, Steps & Retaining Walls FAQ
Can a cracked concrete step be patched?
Sometimes. The decision depends on the depth of damage, stability of the step and condition of its support. Moving or extensively deteriorated steps may need replacement.
Will resurfacing correct a settled walkway?
No. Resurfacing does not address a moving or poorly supported slab. Settlement and drainage need assessment before a new surface is considered.
Why is drainage important behind a retaining wall?
Water can increase pressure behind the wall and contribute to movement. Drainage is part of the wall design, along with its base, geometry and retained soil.
Do retaining walls need permits?
Requirements depend on dimensions, location and site conditions. Some projects also need engineering. We confirm the applicable requirements for the proposed work.
Will a concrete repair match the existing surface?
Not exactly in every case. Age, aggregate, finishing and weather exposure affect appearance, so repaired areas may remain visible.
What should I do about loose concrete on a balcony?
Keep people away from affected areas and the space below, and arrange assessment. Visible spalling may require structural investigation rather than a surface-only repair.
