Ontario consumer information
General information, not legal advice. Please check the Government of Ontario's guide for full details.
Does my contract need to be in writing?
Yes. Under Ontario's Consumer Protection Act, 2002, home renovation and roofing contracts worth more than $50 must be in writing, and you must receive a copy.
Can I cancel a contract I signed at home?
If you sign a contract in your home, you generally have a 10-day cooling-off period during which you can cancel for any reason without penalty. The 10 days start once you receive a written copy of the contract.
Can the final price be higher than the estimate?
If your contract includes an estimate, the final price can't be more than 10% above it unless you agree in writing to extra work or a higher amount.
What should the written contract include?
Expect the business's name and contact information, a description of the work and materials, the total price, payment terms, start and completion dates, and how changes are handled.
Where can I learn more about my rights?
The Government of Ontario publishes a guide to dealing with home renovation and roofing businesses, linked below.
